Jack Kornfield – Integrating Spiritual Life Into Everyday Life

How To Integrate Spiritual Life with Everyday Life

Jack Kornfield is one of the world’s most respected meditation teachers. He has been a pioneer in bringing mindfulness, meditation and buddhist teachings to the West.

He is a co-founder of the Spirit Rock Meditation Centre and the best selling author of several books on the topics of mindfulness meditation and spiritual practice.

In this interview, Melli talks to Jack about how to integrate spiritual life with everyday life.

Jack clears up some common misconceptions about what it means to be a mindful person and shares why he believes cultivating a peaceful heart within is the most powerful way to cultivate peace without.

You’ll also hear how to overcome the biggest obstacle to mindful living.

Thank you for today’s interview, so full of warmth and wisdom from the heart as well as the mind. I like the ideas of heartfulness and kindfulness I’ve heard during the summit. My appreciation of mindfulness is deepening every day. And I love knowing that the ripples can be profound.

all of the sessions have given me gifts, but this one was just a lovely river of pleasure and real inspiration- with his every phrase, i found something special- perhaps i can eventually be able to escape the ‘tyranny of time’ and recognize the appreciation of the ever-changing ‘now’-

I can’t get over how many inspiring and thought-provoking nuggets are embedded in this short conversation. Having heard of Jack Kornfield but not yet having read any of his work, I look forward to checking it out. Many thanks to Melli and Jack. This is a conversation I would happily return to again and again.

What a lovely and wise man, very glad I signed up for the online mindfulness training he and Tara are giving on Sounds True. I especially love the quote about your mind being like a bad neighbourhood. That’s something I can relate to I’m afraid…

I am learning Hakomi, a psychotherapy where therapist and client work in mindfulness, as much as can be done by humans (!). we say, “because those deep early hurts happened in relationship, it is in relationship that we can heal them”. And one of those relationships is the one we can have with ourselves, self-compassion, acceptance and respect.

Thank you, Melli for this wonderful gift you have given to us. Each speaker has a different point of view and I have learned something from each and every one of them. I am building up a list of books to read and learn from, also. I am a math-science person, so I am very impressed with the number of neuroscientists involved in this summit. I have been told many times to let go and just let it happen when I meditate. Hearing that same message told in a slightly different way by all these speakers is finally getting through to me. What a wonderful day it will be when mindfulness practice reaches critical mass.

I have heard Jack speak before in a couple of talks online. You can see the loving kindness radiating out from him. There is much to learn from him. As always, thanks Melli & team.

Thank you so much for these amazing sessions, I am gaining so much insight into myself and my teachings. I love the interwoven themes of love, compassion and kindness and I especially enjoyed Jack’s session today! Looking forward to finding some of his books and pursuing further studies.

What a powerful and inspiring session, thank you Jack and Melli for sharing it. So much insight and clarity, given with such warmth, love and understanding, this has been an amazing start for my day. Thank you

Thank you…really enjoyed all the interviews and I think I have learned so much. With the interview with Sam Harris, I felt myself feeling very uncomfortable with him and what he was saying, but I am finally learning to recognising that I felt these feelings, and to step back and still try and listen to what he was saying, and to be non judgemental.

Once again thanks to you Meli and your hard working team.

I was really looking forward to hearing this man’s voice and manner of being. I first encountered his work as I was researching material during my psychodynamic training. I ended up leaving that sort of training because of J Kornfield and others who were not just less antagonistic but thoroughly convinced of love and its benefits. I would venture to say, that there are many people who practice mindfulness and are not aware of their actions having a name. This talk is full of feelings and imagery that I can propose to the traumatised people coming to our center for help.
    Thank you so much.

Dear Melli and Jack… thank you so much for today’s summit! Melli, I sure hope that you are able to visit Spirit Rock Meditation Center sometime–it has been a sacred haven for myself and many others on this spiritual journey! I felt today’s summit was full of wisdom and grace… thank you Jack for consistently reminding us that mindfulness has to be “wedded with loving kindness and compassion”. And, the last important comment is precious: the most important obstacle to developing a mindfulness practice is NOT doing it. I teach mindfulness to teachers and this weekend, we are having a half-day session. One of the themes is obstacles to setting up a practice and I will certainly share that tidbit. After today’s session, I felt blesses and nurtured… thank you both!! Rosann (from Chico)

I watched Sam’s talk earlier in the day today and just wrapped up your talk with Jack – I gotta say there are moments in each talk that are filled with loving Kindness in their own way. thanks for bringing every aspect and viewpoint of practice and development to us Melli!

What resonated with me was when Jack said that the inner development needs to catch up with the outer development (e.g. biotech, space technology, nanotechnology, internet,..etc). However, it feels like we humans are starting to use the technology we have now to better reach and teach each other. This summit is a great example of how it uses the internet and its tools to serve as a way to share and consolidate mindfulness teachings. Melli, I hope that other mindfulness advocates/gurus from other parts of the world can learn/replicate this type of summit in their own languages in order to truly make a global impact. It would be great if someone could translate these talks in Chinese in order to reach out to 20% of the world’s population.

I am so enjoying what I am hearing and what I am learning. It’s interesting to be aware of when my mind is wandering during the presentations and just gently calling back my attention. It is actually very in-powering and comfortable. Thank you so much for this Mindfulness Summit!!

I really appreciated Jack’s answer of the final question. Your answer felt valid and satisfied the logical part of my brain. It is a goal that may accomplished!

More great information that makes so much sense to me. I am so enjoying these daily messages and it is helping me to be more “mindful” than I have been in a long time. Thank you Melli for all your efforts into making this happen.

Thank you for this summit Melli. It’s been amazing deepening my practice and understanding of what mindfulness really is. I recently injured my back and have had to stop all physical activity. Yoga is part of my daily practice and I meditate every day right after a session – it’s been challenging feeling at peace with who I am without being able to physically do something that has helped my body and soul feel connected! What a great interview at just the right time to teach me the importance of being kind to myself and understanding the eb and flow of the river that is life and that IT IS OKAY AND NORMAL to feel “negative” emotions even after having practiced for a long time. I am beginning to feel like this injury is a gift that allows me to sit even more still with who I am inside and all the icky shame, fear, anxiety and other issues I struggle with and learn to accept them, and keep doing what is important in the moment. Thank you so much again. I look forward to more!

    ~Thich Nhat Hanh
“If you pour a handful of salt into a cup of water, the water becomes undrinkable. But if you pour the salt into a river, people can continue to draw the water to cook, wash, and drink. The river is immense, and it has the capacity to receive, embrace, and transform. When our hearts are small, our understanding and compassion are limited, and we suffer. We can’t accept or tolerate others and their shortcomings, and we demand that they change. But when our hearts expand, these same things don’t make us suffer anymore. We have a lot of understanding and compassion and can embrace others. We accept others as they are, and then they have a chance to transform.”

I have learned so much from reading and listening to Jack Kornfield. Thank you Melli for having him in your Summit!

I’ve known about Jack for many years as being one of the early pioneers, for lack of a better word, of mindfulness and meditation in the West. This is the first time I’ve heard him speak, and his presence is palpable through the screen. It’s the same tranquil, peaceful energy that I’ve felt in the presence of some of my meditation instructors while in their presence. I’ve also seen other lamas, monks, and gurus in videos on screen who have nowhere near that kind of energy and presence. It’s a very rare quality, and Jack Kornfield has it. Something very simple and profound.

I thought his presentation was the perfect follow up to Sam Harris last night. Very different, almost diametrically opposed, yet the same basis – mindfulness.

Being a part of this summit has been a rare gift for me. It’s like being a part of the process of a beautiful song being written, with Melli and Matt and team as conductors. Thank you.

“The point is not to perfect yourself. The point is to perfect your love.” That is all needed to hear to get me on the cushion with more regularity. Thank you Jack. What a wonderful talk. Melli, this summit is fantastic. Many thanks to you.

Melli, thank you for this immense gift on an immense scale. Your vision of helping countless people in a deep and life-changing, life-healing way is certainly being realized. Thank you and Jack for precious learning today. And thank you for inviting every speaker; the diversity is remarkable and helpful. Glad beyond words that I learned about this Summit to be able to enjoy it daily.
