Jon Kabat-Zinn – The Deeper Dimensions of Mindfulness

Jon Kabat-Zinn – The Deeper Dimensions of Mindfulness

Jon Kabat-Zinn is a Professor of Medicine Emeritus, mindfulness teacher, bestselling author and founder of the groundbreaking Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. He is the founding Executive Director of the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Jon has received numerous awards for his work on MBSR such as the Interface Foundation Career Achievement Award and the New York Open Center’s 10th Year Anniversary Achievement in Medicine and Health Award in 1994; the Art, Science and Soul of Healing Award from the Institute of Health and Healing, California Pacific Medical Center in 1998; the 2nd Trailblazer Award for pioneering work in the field of integrative medicine by the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in 2001; the Distinguished Friend Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in 2005; and, an Inaugural Pioneer in Integrative Medicine Award from the Bravewell Philanthropic Collaborative for Integrative Medicine in 2007. Jon has been a pioneer in making mindfulness mainstream.

In this interview Jon touches in on the deeper dimensions of mindfulness practice and the ‘self realisation’ that unfolds as a result of the practice. He clears up some common misconceptions about mindfulness and invites us to know for ourselves the sacredness that is inherent in this present moment (If we’ll only wake up to it).

He also answers the question “Is there a right way to practice” or a “right tradition” and gives wise advice on dealing with one of the biggest challenges in awakening.

Such an inspiring and informative session today, it is amazing to share such a moment of empowerment and enlightenment, and I would like to thank Melli and Jon for being so kind as to allow me to do this. Today just spoke such volumes and has brought so much together.
Thanks magnified for Matt and Melli for doing this Summit, and allowing myself and so many others to take part. I can honestly say that I have been doing mindfulness for some time, but just didn’t know I was, thinking that what I felt and was doing was “left of field”. This mindfulness summit has brought it all together, bringing me a sense of awareness that I was missing, and given me the courage and strength to move forward with more purpose, understanding, compassion and wisdom.
So thank you, from my inner being, for all you have done, and to the wonderful people you have introduced me to.
Much gratitude, kindness and blessings always

how can anyone be mindful of this moment when wondering whether this will be the moment a violent game is advertised?? what a shame. it has been so awe inspiring so far. i could cry.

may all of us – from many countries, from many backgrounds bless this moment with a resolve to work in unity for the betterment of life and our planet. May we be bonded by a spiritual quest that rules out war and destruction of our planet which sustains us.

blessings to Melli and to Jon and so many amazing presenters.

      metta, peace

I must say one thing – I am a Buddhist – I am happy and rejoice in that. I do not to have to be ashamed of that. I see “mindfulness” as just one path factor out of 8. So I do take some exception to the rampant secularization of mindfulness.

So to those who think mindfulness is cool – there are 7 other path factors that are pretty cool as well and they do play well together and that system is called Buddhism.

        blessings to all.

please could you make jon’s live session available without the ads so it can be followed without the shocks. all the other sessions have been amazing-so many different aspects to consider. thankyou for all the effort you have put into this. i now have so many links to follow up i think doing so will keep me truly on the mindful path.

When practice began for me over 25 years ago, meditation was very much on the fringe. It’s so refreshing to see meditation and mindfulness becoming mainstream! Thank you so much for creating this wonderful vehicle to share all these views of the practice, and creating a space where the essence of the Teaching can shine.

To share what I have learned thus far, especially in relation to chronic pain, I put together a book: “Peace with Pain: Your Guide to Life in a Malfunctioning Body” by Jenna Sundell. (www.jennasundell.com)

I hope you will check it out, and please let me know of any future summits you put together!

Maybe it can become an annual get-together, where we all continue to spread the Light of meditation & mindfulness to create the “critical mass” we need to create an Awakened Society!

    Hi Melli
what a journey. I am sad to say though, that I never received any mails from You, except from the welcomming mail on the 6.th when I joined you.
    Looking forward to Jon:-()

This Summit has been life-changing in the sense that Mindfullness practice has become a daily ritual. Learning has been in abundance thanks to the many speakers that have participated. Thanks Melli (and team) for making it such a joy!

The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle is a book that l adore! It transformed my perception/perspective of life into a 3D experience (for want of a better description). I suddenly started to see and feel the landscape around me in real-time beauty – authencity of the ‘now’ moment.

I feel fortunate to have been a participant of this Mindfull Summit. Thank-you for making it happen.

Day 32…..Practicing mindfulness and meditation for the rest of life.

Thank you Mellie ,Matt and the whole team for conceiving and bringing to life this wonderful mindfulness Summit. The speakers talks, knowledge and wisdom they have shared with us has left me feeling exhilarated and exhausted. I’m intrigued and excited by the prospect of the Summits success potentially starting some kind of follow up initiative.

I have been fortunate to have been with the summit every day since Oct 1st and not to tune in tomorrow for the next talk will take some acceptance on my part. I will miss Melli and is that a bird in the background?

Heartfelt thanks to all involved in this project as well as all those that I have joined listening, learning and practicing with for October 2015, surely a landmark date that will be seen as a colossal turning point in bringing Mindfulness into the mainstream.

    Love and Patience,

    Graham in Leicester UK

Great thanks and gratitude for all the summit participants! I’ve meditated for almost 20 years (Vippasana) yet it has been an incredible gift for me to hear some of the same things (but maybe in a slightly different way) and “new” concepts. I will move forward with this extraordinary resource in my practice of trying to live each moment of my life.
    Blessings and peace to all-
    Sharon

Big disappointment to just find out that my iPad can not receive the Livestream. Is it being recorded so it will be available later. I guess I missed something, I could have brought my laptop if I had understood.

  11. Schalk Lubbe

Thank you, John, for the profound insights in today’s teaching.
I’m new to this, but already seeing that this is the way forward … for me, and for the world!

I also started listening in to the livestream event … until it was rudely interrupted by them throwing in an advertisement of a Maserati starting up and charging away. That moment, I closed my browser and cancelled my ustream account (which I had just set up specifically for this livestream event). I experienced Ustream’s rude interruption as akin to somebody starting to loudly play rock-and-roll music in a church where people are silently praying. How rude of them to misuse this event to gain more subscribers to their “pro” service!

    Dear Mindfulness Summit team,

Thank-you so much for a wonderful month, I have loved every minute and will continue to.

The live stream didn’t work for me unfortunately. I signed up to Ustream, clicked “follow” many times over and watched a little blue circle for an hour…with no luck or link to the live stream.

I hope there is some way of following it / joining in albeit delayed?

  13. Kathleen Rutkowski

Wow. Incredible. Awesome. Fantastic. Thank you, Melli. Just participated in Jon’s Meditation and it was a wonderful ending to an absolutely outstanding event.

  14. Steve Unwin

Thank you Melli, thank you Jon, thank you all. Livestream perfect practice to apply mindfuulness in real life not just when all is calm and quiet (even if interruptions were not planned!). I have learnt a lot from the many facets of this summit and it has helped me strenghten my practice.

    Thank you again 🙂

  15. Elizabeth Pontillo

Thank you, Melli, for a wonderful journey. Looking forward to revisiting some of the sessions. This was such an important way to remind myself how to stay grounded in challenging and changing times. Blessings to you!

  16. Linda D

Have loved the summit. Thank you so much. I was eagerly anticipating the Livestream. Despite everything being in place it was too quiet to hear. What a HUGE disappointment! Is there any way it can be ‘listened again’ to, please. Thank you!

  17. Hilary White

This has been a wonderful experience to re-connect for 31 days with the Mindfulness world from here in North Africa, where in 17 years I’ve not met anyone who had a clue as to what I’m talking about! (I think they think it’s because of my American accent, but…) I look forward to hearing about any next steps as you plan them, Melli and Matt… maybe a retreat (I could plan the logistics) here, to bring a little Mindfulness to this neck of the woods? Take care…

  18. Wendy Holladay

To all the guys at Mrs Mindfulness and the Mindfulness Summit, THANK YOU. I loved this live stream and felt really connected, thoroughly enjoyed the meditation and as a newcomer I can not express how much gratitude I have for this summit and for you guys. You really have opened a new way of life for me and I can not THANK YOU enough. Joys and Blessings coming to you all.

  19. Amy F

Thank you, the best month of discovery I have had since I was a teenager. I love the analogy to this being like kindergarten and the “this is only the beginning” thoughtfulness. That in itself is a meditation for me. “Always about you knowing yourself and being yourself more fully.”

  20. Nina Matzat

So much wisdom and so many things learned. Thanks for all the crazy organisation of the summit, Melli, its been a blast! Looking forward to re-listening to the talks. Sending from big love over from autmny-cold but sunny Hamburg, Germany. And remember: you may ask yourself “what comes after life?” but instead, better ask “is there life before death?” – my quote of the year. Namaste, Nina

  21. Lawrence Simpson

Thanks so much for all the work! The live meditation was wonderful despite the intrusive ad breaks. Sorry Ustream felt the need to do that after all your efforts. Thirty days ago I would have been really upset. Today it was a great opportunity to use what I’ve learned and implement a bit of the “Sounds” meditation!

    Blessings to all!

  22. Florent

Went to the live stream and was interrupted by at least 3 commercials which was quite disturbing. Otherwise really enjoyed the meditation. Just letting you know what went on at our end.

  23. Janis Dehler

A huge thank you, Melli and Matt for all you have done to make this possible. It has been an incredible 31 days, looking forward each day to each speaker, meditation and all the connections. You chose so wisely to close with Jon Kabat-Zinn. Blessings to you both on your journey. I feel blessed to be a part of this world community.

  24. Larisa

I too am deeply thankful for this fabulous month. The livestream isn’t working for either…please find a way to make it available to us? Even if for the next 24hrs?

  25. Elizabeth Hofstetter

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for this amazing month of speakers and information. I am a preschool teacher and I have been inspired to not only share this with everyone I know, but especially with my co-teachers, the families and the children that I teach. I have faith that perhaps this will be a true turning point for our world. I know it has been for me. What a blessing.

Dear Melli and team, thank you so very very much for all your hard work to put this summit together. I am new to mindfulness and i found the talks so so interesting, fascinating and inspiring. I already feel that what i took from the talks and the mindfulness exercises has a positive impact on my life, and I have recommended the summit to my friends as well. Thank you so much again for organizing this summit, the design and functionalities of the website are brilliant, and Melli does an outstanding job with the interviews. I enjoyed every second of it and I hope there will be a continuation!
