The Relationship Between Mindfulness & Spirital Awakening – Tami Simon

How Does Mindfulness Relate To Spiritual Awakening? An Interview & Meditation With Tami Simon

Tami Simon is the founder and publisher of Sounds True, a multimedia company dedicated to disseminating spiritual wisdom.

Sounds True is one of the world’s largest publishers of spoken-word spiritual teachings, and is one of the world’s first organizations to operate with genuinely Integral principles, with the emphasis on ‘multiple bottom lines’ of purpose, profit, people, and planet. Tami is also a meditation teacher, specialising in teaching ‘body based awareness’ practices.

Today, join Tami as she describes how mindfulness relates to ‘spiritual awakening’ and how our sense of who we are changes when we become more mindful.

She also offers creative ways to bring the ‘informal practice’ of mindfulness into daily life and work life and she shares how animals and nature can be helpful in reconnecting us with the present moment.

In this video you’ll also be guided by Tami, in an experience of ‘body based’ or ‘somatic’ meditation.

thank you Tami, ” enjoy every moment , it will be all be over too soon” . Every moment not just the peaceful, calm, happy ones. I feel stronger to be with people I love and find their energy and way of being difficult. Feeling less afraid of the discordance and anger of others. And the body meditation was great. I was painting the bathroom when i started listening to your conversation and now sitting in the kitchen feeling strong and quiet. Thank you. Mwah x

Thanks Tami! I really enjoyed today’s session. I particularly loved Tami’s disposition and clarity in her discussion. A true meditator’s disposition of slowing down. Seems like she’s been applying the principle which I utter to myself everyday when I want to slow down and live moment by moment…’Peace is every step’ taken from Thich Nhat Hanh’s book: Peace is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life”. Beautiful interview!

Melli – Thank you for putting in so much of your personal time to put on this summit. 3 months ago a news program presented John Cabbot Zin and the idea of mindfulness. Since then I’ve been looking dilligently to find more information. When I happened upon the summit was such a joy. At this point, meditation is slowly illuminating things for me. I hope that peace, healing, and joy are permanent changes!

so loved the home*coming of this body*based meditation… heartfelt thanks to you tami & for those responsible for bringing this virtual space into being for so many to benefit from an inner*spaciousness that is so essential

Thank you Tami for a wonderful meditation, I felt so alive. Another fascinating interview Melli & wonderful to experience sunrise with you from the other side of our beautiful planet. Namaste

This was truly a talk to cherish – I loved the fact Tami mentioned animals. I have very similar experiences with my 17-year old cat – her slow pace, the connection and love and respect we have grounds me more than I could have ever imagined! She teaches me.

The first time I sat on a cushion, was like a homecoming to me as well! When Tami said those words, my heart stopped and throat tightened as I suddenly remembered that feeling. I get very emotional, when I start to think of my journey with mindfulness – how I started to finally become me.

I also felt very happy for Tami, as well – weird, isnt it? Well, not really, come to think of it, as we are all connected.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for organising this summit! I am looking forward to it every day. Yours, Outi from Helsinki, Finland

Yes I loved her mention of animals as well. My sweet dog died earlier this year and I miss her grounded, embodied energy and unconditional love every day. I’m so grateful for the other dogs in my neighborhood and at work, with whom I connect. They are life savers for so many of us.

I was also very moved by Tami’s discussion of how animals (specifically dogs) can be part of our path to and experience of mindfulness and, perhaps more so, of groundedness. Having also lost a dog recently (who lived a good, long life) this resonated. Wishing Tami and others peace and openness to the next canine (or other animal) companion that may walk with them!

Thank you Tami, Melli and Everyone who is a part of making this summit happen!! It is because of Sounds True that I learned about the Summit and I am so grateful for that. I’ve tuned in every day so far, but have to say that this interview with Tami and the meditation she led us through resonate most deeply in me. I’ve always been intimidated by the somatic body stuff. But the warm, calm and gentle way that Tami led us through the meditation encouraged me to open to the possibility that this method might be something I could actually learn and practice. It makes the most sense, to me, of any meditation technique I’ve learned about thus far because it is a full embodied process and we are, after all, fully embodied. Thank You Sounds True for all your support of this summit and thank you Mrs. Mindfulness and Everyone else!! I’m doing my best to spread the word. 🙂 <3 , Helen

I would like thank Melli and this summit for another great interview with an amazing person view and insight. Loved how Tami pointed out that she is more in tune with referring mindfulness to her as awarefulness .

    Thank You

  8. Rose Momsen

This is just the most amazing collection of wisdom and joyful presence in manageable bites! I am faithfully following day by day, and so appreciate this amazing gift of your focus and vision, Melli. Tami’s program today was just exceptional. She’s an excellent example of mindfulness and awarefulness in daily, momentary action. I felt deeply the somatic mediation she did for us today. Wonderous. Thank you again. I look forward to the rest of the month.

Embodied Immediacy. The Secret Breath…a genuine turning point in “hooked on the breath” meditation practice. Thank you. Melli and Tami, for this new practice. While following with you for the first time and even taking notes, it opened a new path.

I am a beginner practitioner of Self-Realization Fellowship, Kriya Yoga meditation and exercises and didn’t think I would be able to have time to accommodate or facilitate the summit lessons. But the two (Hindu and Buddhist) practices compliment one another in a unique and unexpected way…especially with this new grounding technique. Thank you again for this summit.

Carry On. Love is coming to us all.

  10. Renee

That was so wonderful. Thank you Tami for sharing your insight and the somatic meditation. As someone who spends a great deal of time “out of my body” I found that incredibly grounding, but also became very aware of pain and held emotion through the chest. Unexpected tears arose out of seemingly nothing and then melted away. The experience of nothingness together with tears was quite beautiful. Thank you again Tami and Mellie.

  11. Jo-Anna Roberts

Thank you for this interview. I found the experience of whole body breathing powerful and profound. I will definitely explore this more and look up Sounds True. Thank you for being a guide into this wonderful world. Your inspiring summit is really doing something you discussed here – turning fuzzy definitions into unique experiences. Thank you once again.

  12. Jim Bright

Thanks for introducing me to Tami and Sounds True. A very interesting interview and a very interesting person ! She has a very calming presence in the way she speaks and she makes a lot of sense.

A wonderful session thank-you Melli and Tami. Your backdrop Melli changed from a beautiful golden colour to green, and I felt a similar shift inside, as I became more aware of the possible sameness of spiritual awakening, whatever the trigger; a teacher or teaching, an experience, a loss, a gain, a significant change… The important thing being that it happens? And that it’s unique for everyone and the same. I love Tami’s approach and the lifetime of learning and insight she so generously shares through Sounds true, what a feast. I am loving this learning experience Melli, thank-you and all your speakers for connecting us all and beyond

  14. Lesley Robin

Thank you both, Melli and Tami, for such a superb and inspiring interview and meditation. May this Summit be the first of many more to come. I am loving it and in great appreciation and gratitude for all the hard work that is going into it day by day.

  15. angie

Beautiful, inspiring … a true gift to all of us. Thank you Tami! I also joined the summit through the sounds true newsletter.
Thank you Melli, for putting all of this together.
All the interviews are incredibly interesting, insightful and so rich…
And its only the beginning, can’t wait to see/tune in for the rest!
    Again, Thank you!!!!

  16. Linda Kong

I like Tami’s use of the word “awarefulness”. But I also wonder if mindfulness is the same as “thoughtfulness”? It was a little bit difficult for me to focus on the interview with Tami as she felt “intimidating” to me. She rarely smiles and so when she mentions how she enjoys life, it just doesn’t synch up with what she says.

    1. liz Caruso

I have to agree with you Linda with your point on Tami. I loved her insight but a few times I found myself questioning why doesn’t she ever smile which sometimes took my though away from what was being said. I like that she got me thinking especially after the talk.

  17. dragica

I enjoyed Tami’s Waking up interviews very much, and am so glad to have this opportunity to hear her side of the story. The breathing was amazing. Thank you very much for this series, Melli.

  18. S

Sorry… my comment was cut off. An email from Sounds True informed me of this summit, so I thank Tami and associates for notifying me. Tami’s story of her dog would touch all of us who have felt a deep connection with, and have learned from, our furry friends. I recommend the sweet little book, “Guardians of Being” by Eckhart Tolle and Patrick McDonnell ( the creator of the Mutts comic strip), published by New World Library. It honors our little friends and calls us to awareness.

Thank you to our host and to all who are assisting with this summit.

  19. Toby Cantlie

Ooh thank you, I really enjoyed Tami’s talk in so many ways. It rang true!
And to see Tami and Melli open their eyes after the meditation felt profoundly delicate to me.
I am deeply grateful to the whole program once again.

  20. Felipe

What a day! Such a nice and truly embracing conversation you two had. Tami, I never heard before of SoundsTrue, but I’m glad I just did. Melli, once again, thank you.

    .

Another thought came through the practice session. My injury came from ambulance service. Knowing human anatomy, helped me today a great deal for visualization with the guidance Ms. Simon shared with us.
“the chronically traumatized individuals generally show no change or even a decrease in heart rate. These sufferers tend to be plagued with dissociative symptoms, including frequent spacy-ness, unreality, depersonalization, and various somatic and health complaints. Somatic symptoms include gastrointestinal problems, migraines, some forms of asthma, persistent pain, chronic fatigue, and general disengagement from life.”
― Peter A. Levine, In an Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness (Courtesy GoodReads).

My own background is trauma and PTSD (Personal, Lived Experience). Peter Levine, jumped into mind today, as did David Berceli (Tension, Trauma Release Exercise). Both these gentlemen know psychological trauma from the place of the body, and nervous system physiology

Another gift, full of brilliance. Thank you so much. Be Well.

  22. Emily Hanlon

Thank you Mel again another great interview with Tami, Tami is great to listen to, her practice was very insightful, my first time to practice this way, , I will certainly listen to her podcast, again thank you warm wishes for a good day, Emily from Ireland xx

  23. Adrian Linack

Such a wonderful meditation, made my whole body tingle. Thank you so much Melli for bringing all these different people together so that we can learn and feel what is in resonance with us. Thank you Tami for sharing this beautiful technique with us. I it just wonderful to enjoy every day and every piece of this summit 🙂

  24. Jacqueline McTaggart

Loved this talk but gutted that the free meditation downloads cannot be played on my android phone even though I have a MP3 program app downloaded, was really looking forward to listening to these in between patient visits etc.

  25. Eric Dugas

I really loved the interview and the meditation! This experience of meditation was the hardest for me since the beginning of the summit. It took me more concentration and energy to do this. But, the results where very good. I feel so much better in my body and mind…I feel open!

  26. Shantelle Bates

Another wonderful and informative, insightful session, thank you. I found while I was listening that I was having a lot of ‘aha’ moments, that I had been having moments of mindfulness and spiritual awakening for some time now, but just hadn’t been as aware of them or had the knowledge and understanding to define them as such. Thank you for helping to see it. Looking forward to the coming sessions to broaden my knowledge and mindfulness

  27. Kathleen Rutkowski

Thank you for this wonderful discussion. Tami Simon is a truly inspirational guide to the wonderful potential of the awakening experience, not just for individuals, but for the world as a whole. If indeed everybody could cultivate Embodied Immediacy leading to a connection with the higher, there would still be suffering in the world but humanity’s contribution for the good of the all would be much greater. Wonderful interview.

  28. Carmen Pereira

I am becoming more and more convinced that meditation is or can be a remarkable tool for healing and living more authentically. I think of all of the reasons why I never kept going with it in the past, and, with these interviews, I have more clarity now about what has been happening with me; I have a different perspective about what is happiness, what is mindfulness. I’m glad, Melli, that you asked Tami how she incorporates mindfulness into her day. That information was very interesting.

Thanks, again, to you and crew.

  29. Anita French

I’m over the religious and spiritual beliefs that most people here seem to adhere to. Is this a talk I need to ignore? I’m into mindfulness and the Universe and all, but when it starts getting into the projection of ideas onto a PERSON or BEING, I cringe. Just asking.

    1. Anita French

Ok I just listened. It was not stodgy or preachy at all. I don’t know why I thought it might be. It was great. Thank you, Tami. I’m enjoying the things I’m learning so far. 🙂 I am feeling so strong and peaceful right now after the body/breathing practice.
